What is Thyroid Cancer? A cancer of the thyroid, the butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck. The cause of thyroid cancer is poorly understood but may involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Some people have no symptoms, others may notice a lump in their neck.

•Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine cancer.

•While thyroid cancers are common, they may have few or no signs or symptoms.

•There are several types of thyroid cancer. There are four main types: Papillary (the most common), Follicular (the second most common), Medullary and Anaplastic (the least common but most serious).

•Thyroid cancers occur about three times more often in women than in men.

•The sooner thyroid cancer is discovered, the better chance for prognosis and survival.
